In a tribute to Jesus and his sacrifice the heart is represented crowned with thorns, wounded by a spear and dominated by the cross. Furthermore it is surrounded by flames which symbolise the ardour of mercy that Christ has for sinners. The red heart stands out in a careful blend of shade and bas relief.

Designed by Pope Benedict XIV, it has two sides: one side shows the cross with letters which represent verses that make up the prayer; the other show St Benedict with the words “Eius in obitu nostro presentia muniamur” (“May his presence protect us in the hour of our death”).
