It is said that one day, during Arab rule, a Moor who happened to fall under the balcony of a maiden intent on tending her flowers fell madly in love with her and declared his love for her. The young woman returned the sentiment but, when she found out that the man was already married and would soon be leaving to return to the East to his family, she cut off his head and made a pot of basil from it. The Moor thus remained forever with her, on her balcony, and the seedling grew lushly watered by the young woman’s tears.
