Because of its triangular shape, Sicily is often called Trinacria. The name comes from the ancient Greek treis (three) and àkra (headlands), referring to the perimeter of the island. In heraldry this is defined as a female head with three legs, a symbol also found in the flag of the Sicilian Region.
