Marco Fichera: the excellence of sport made in Sicily

There are those who hold Sicily’s name high around the world with craftsmanship, with tractions, but also with sports.
For this Isola Bella chose to “meet” Marco Fichera, a young Sicilian fencer who won a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Marco, born in Catania, wears the jewelry that makes him feel close to his homeland even when he is traveling the world to follow his fencing commitments. Like the Trinacria, a symbol to which he is deeply attached: “When I am away I miss my family and all the good things typical of our culinary tradition. Of Sicily I love the sea, the sun and the warmth of the people. When I compare myself with athletes from other countries, I am happy because they all have an idea of a wonderful land, full of history, culture. Everyone loves to come to us, and I’m sorry to see that some realities are not handled as well as they could be, and I’m annoyed by that attitude that we sometimes have, that idea that we can go over the rules.

As a professional sportsman, Marco has a clear concept of respect and discipline. “To a young man who dreams of a career as an athlete, I advise him to always believe in himself, to never give up and to fight with all his might. To have the goal clear in your head, even if you may be afraid of some choices: you have to improve yourself in your own land, but also have the courage to leave and go and win elsewhere to honor our Sicily“.

Tireless, Marco: “I have finally recovered from an injury that kept me away from competition; now I am ready to face the last part of the season and the Tokyo Olympics. At this moment in history there is an even greater desire to carry the name of Sicily, of Italy, high: our country will rise again with the commitment of all of us, together“.
